What is the appropriate manner to attach vinyl double pane windows to a house?

aharleyboy asked:

I’ve removed glass and frame from my 1973 single pane aluminum windows. It was nailed to the 2×4’s under the siding. Should I attach the new window to the siding/2×4, or make the opening in the siding larger so it attaches to the 2×4 frame only? It would be more flush outside if I went with the second option. Thanks for your help. I hope you’ve done this before…

How much do double pane windows cost?

cowancommunications asked:

I want to replace my single pane windows with double pane windows. The windows open at the bottom and slide up. The house is old (built in late 1800s) and is wood frame. I am ok with using vinyl windows. Probably the sashes would need to be replaced as well since some of the pulleys that keep the windows open don’t work anymore. Can any one give me a rough estimate of the cost of the windows and the cost of labor to install them?

Felicia asked:

My husband and I are building a house in North Carolina and I can’t seem to get prices off the internet for double-paned fixed picture windows. The windows that we need are very long but not very wide. Could anyone please point me in the right direction as to where to find this? We live in Maryland right now though!

What is usual lifespan of double pane windows?

phw1943 asked:

A couple of windows are now gathering condensation after 22 years. They’re up high, so the labor cost in replacement involved will be high, since installation is a 3-person job. Would it be wise to replace them all at this time or is there
any realistic chance that they might keep working for some time to come? Thanks!

In winter, does the plastic film sealed over your home windows really save money on your home heating bills?

We own a newer house with double pane windows, however, it always seems cold in the house and my heat bills are out of control every year. This year, I was think of buying some of that 3M film to cover the windows. It would cost about $60 to do the whole house. Is it worth it? Don’t tell me to turn down the thermostat or wear lots of sweaters, I’m trying to be comfortable at the least expense and ease for the entire family. Thanks for your answers…!

Paul DA asked:

The window is 35″ by 28″. The window itself is about twenty to thirty years old. Would it just be cheaper to replace both windows? Would it be easier if I did it myself, or had someone do it for me?
