Does anyone have any good weatherization tips for foggy windows?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009
nonyabiznas asked:

My windows are single pane older trailer style windows. They do have two windows but each pane is about four inches between. They get moisture on the outer windows inside in the winter and then freeze over leaving them all foggy and icy. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening this year? I plan to cover them over with the plastic that you put on with double sided tape and a hair dryer. I’m looking for a solution that might treat it for the wh ole winter. If you have any good tips I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Is mold between the windows a health concern?

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Rachel asked:

I have double paned windows and there is white mold growing between the glass panes. Is this a health hazard?
I can’t scrub it out because it’s between the two panes of glass. I know the only way to get rid of it is to replace the windows, but I’m just wondering if it’s a health risk.

Is my utilities company ripping me off?

Monday, March 30th, 2009
LuckyBucky09 asked:

My fiance and I have a tiny two bedroom apartment, and we are being so careful to keep lights off, to not have the heat on, to not use a lot of hot water, etc. This is our first time renting an apartment and our first utility bill shocked us!! $50!!!! We seriously have never turned the heat above 50 except for one time (we splurged..went to 60). It’s the middle of November and I’m freezing. My fingers and toes are numb as Im writing and I’m snuggled up in a blanket. We have our fridge turned down as low as it can go while keeping the food safe to eat. We dont have a washer or dryer inside the apartment. We have carpetted floors, and double pane windows. I don’t understand why our bill was so much! When I called the electric company they said that all renters experience higher bills in winter months, and that it should be lower in summer when I’m not using any heat. I tried to explain that I wasn’t using any heat, and she got really rude. I also found out that they charge 0.08 cents/energy unit AND a $0.36/day surcharge, just for being connected! We are planning to get married this march, and with college fees - we are living on dollar store food when we eat at all. We can’t afford to have such high electricity bills!! Does anyone have any suggetions for me? Have you had similar experiences with your electric company? If anything, can you tell me how to get warm!! I have blankets, thick socks, sweaters… its not enough!! Help!

Replacing 90 year old wood. How about Andersen Renewal Windows?

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Mystery Man asked:

I own a house built in 1924, and I’d like to replace 9 windows. The house is in SF, and is an Art Deco style house. I have nice french open pane wood windows in the front, and just simple double hung 3X5 windows in the rear.

I like wood windows, but I like the Fibrex composite by Andersen that blends wood and vinyl. Seems easy to clean, simple, easier to install, and more earth friendly since they don’t chop down more trees.

Would you guys go for this? Keep the original wood windows in the front of the house, but replace with these Andersen Renewal windows facing the rear of the house?

thnx

Attic/Basement insulation question?

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Christian asked:

I just bought a house, and after burning through a half tank of heating oil in 2 weeks realized that I have some major efficiency issues that need to be fixed asap. The house has baseboard heat, all new double-pane windows, new oil furnace, 3 zone heat. The rooms under the 2 attics are COLD - so I know that heat is escaping out the roof. Thus I need to insulate. The floors in these rooms are really cold as well (where the basement is underneath).

1. The basement has insulation between the floor joists under these floors throughout. Is that insulation actually keeping the floors colder than they would be if it was removed?

2. Should I pull the basement insulation and install new insulation above the ceilings in the attic, or should I have both above and below the room? (I should probably note that the basement seems to be nice and cozy - probably warmer than the actual heated rooms at times.)

POLL: do you have regular windows “or” energy efficient windows?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
Barbara L asked:

we have energy efficent windows…

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn’t paid for them.

Hellloooo…………just because I’m blonde doesn’t mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves!

Helllooooo? It’s been a year, I told him. There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back.

Guess I won that stupid argument.

I bet he felt like an idiot.

I need help with a school project about designing an energy efficient house?

Friday, March 27th, 2009
First L asked:

ok.so for science class, we’ve each been individually designing an energy efficient house. Our project has to include a drawing or a model of the house, including an explanation with seven or more design features talking about the positive and negative features about them. we MUST include a description of what the energy efficient appliances do, and include the positive features and negative features about them.
I need help with the following design features, any information would be helpful!

Double Pane windows, Solar Panels, Energy efficient lightbulbs, Water (harvesting, bathroom, kitchen, gardening)
Energy Efficient Appliances, Vegetable garden, Wind power, and rain water harvesting

we also have to choose a location as to where our house would be located and why, I chose singapore for the climate. any other info or help would be much appreaciated. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS

2k budget for Home Theater speakers - Onkyo TX-SR674 a/v receiver [Thanks in advance]?

Friday, March 27th, 2009
gwhilicker asked:

In the learning phase but need speaker recommendation for a system built around an Onkyo TX-SR674 a/v receiver. Would like an entire 6.1 system with in-ceiling rear speakers and one that will do double duty for music playing.

Beside the Onkyo no other power source is presently used. The system is going into a 3-walled room [the fourth wall was partially removed to give a 20ft opening into the kitchen]. The dimensions of the “viewing/listening” area is 13.5ft[w] x 19.5 ft[l] x 8ft[h. Of note, there is an additional 13.5FT[W] X 8ft[L] of open walking space beyond the initial 19.5ft long viewing/listening area that sound will “bleed” into too. Also the sound will bleed over into the parallel kitchen space with similar dimensions of 12.5ft x 27ft [19.5ft + 8ft] x 12.5ft. Also hardwood floors and about 8ft of double pane windows in the listening area.

How do I go about fixing broken windowpanes on vinyle windows?

Friday, March 27th, 2009
zkingdana asked:

I was installing a new Milgard window and accidentally broke one of the panes. I need to pry off the plastic coverings, measure the window and order a replacement double pane at a glass supplier. Is this a do it yourself project?
