Replacement Windows - Nothing fancy, just dependable?

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Kelly asked:

I have 14 double hung windows that need to be replaced. All are twin (meaning 2 windows side by side). They are wood single pane. The sills need replacing too. When buying replacement windows, are the whole window and frame (and sill) replaced? I’m looking for vinyl replacements, low e, low solar gain, double pane.

I had one estimate of $8200! Dang. That was a lot more than I expected. I’ve priced the ones at Home Depot and for my size he quoted me a price of $200 each (Not including installation).

This whole window replacement thing is really confusing. Thanks for any and all help!

What happens to a warranty (on installed windows) when the manufacturer is purchased by another company?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Dave R asked:

The home we purchased has several double-hung vinyl windows made by a manufacturer named Repco, which was bought by another company, Northern Building Supplies. Despite their website’s claim that Repco is now “under the leadership” of their company, they told me that they are refusing to honor the warranty (20 years) for several windows which have had broken seals and now have condensation between the glass panes.

Can they do this? I thought that when a company purchased another company, they assumed all the same rights and responsibilities of that company.

Suggestions for window weatherstrip for Peach-Tree windows?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
ang253 asked:

I have 20 y.o. Peach-Tree casement , double pane windows & the weatherstripping has deteriorated & crumbled..
I have contacted the Peach-Tree Co. & have been informed that they no longer stock or have any weatherstripping or parts for these windows.
I believe that this is absurd as the windows should be lasting much longer than 20 years & the needed weatherstripping therefore should continue to be available…..& they are still in business !!
We have looked high & low for some kind of replacement without any success.
I would not recommend Peach-Tree as I do believe that this is called totally ‘UNFAIR ” to the consumer !!!
Do they believe that I should now have to purchase new windows for this absurd reason?
The weatherstripping is essential & none can be found to replace.
Appreciate any suggestions or help !!!
I have been to Lowe’s, Home depot, Hardware stores, etc.
