How do I install storm windows on a double and triple window?

My house was built in 1933 and has old double hung windows. Single pane and most are double with some triple windows. I could double up some single storm windows but that would not be right. There is a small (1/2″) trim piece around each window that runs flush with the middle piece. I did not think that would be enough material to attach a storm window onto.
